This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Japan Sign Design Association (SDA). Since the first call for entries to the SDA Award was held a year after the Association’s founding, this year’s competition is the 59th edition. The outstanding works submitted this year not only demonstrate remarkable design quality but also embody the depth of SDA’s six decades of history.
The Association extends its sincere gratitude to all entrants, collaborators, and supporters.
In recent years, the story behind each work has become increasingly important in the judging process. Beyond visual impact, what moves us is the clarity of purpose—what is being conveyed, to whom, and on what conceptual foundation. Once again, the award-winning works demonstrate strong storytelling power.
It is often said that design has shifted from “things” to “experiences.” Yet, from its inception 60 years ago, sign design has always aimed at “communicating information to people.” Today, together with concepts like branding and identity, it has grown into a field that highlights design’s social role. Over the past six decades, the SDA Award has been a source of learning and inspiration. The Association will continue to pass on these records and memories to future generations, contributing to a richer society ahead.
